I'm wondering why homophobia is so high here in the hispanic/latino community. I understand the Catholic/religious faiths are a big part of the culture and community, but often times on latino television programs homosexuality is still portrayed as an illness and "changeable", and quite a few hispanic doctors i've spoken to still believe that homosexuality is "curable" and often are not up to date with the mainstream research. Most straight hispanic guys (and girls) I've known abhor gay people, fathers allow their sons to play violent video games and curse at an early age for fear their son will be a "sissy" or "gay"; and a lot of gay/bisexual hispanic men seem to adopt the urban-ghetto/gangbanger image just to prove their masculinity or live a double life (on the down low). I'm not saying it's always like that (I'm hispanic myself and the majority of my hispanic friends are open to gay/lesbians but still I see so much hatred towards GLBT in the latino community these days. Why?

because it is a taboo. many people have beleif that it is evil due to the catholic faith, which is dominant is latino countries. also, the fear of rejection from their families. our families are our life in the latino world, without them, you have nothing. fear is what usually "keeps us in line". the thought of dishonour and shame usually hinders one from allowing themselves to publicly display their sexuallity. most gays, lesbians...etc in our community keep it secret as to not cause trouble. also the cultural difference has a major impact on how that topic is viewed. with repetition, and a little brainwashing, they get them to think homosexuality is negative.

It is? I think it's mostly Mexican culture (Machismo is big there)..but in general it has to do with religious beliefs that have been ingrained since they were young (like homosexuality is bad)
